Yesterday, Lishui City held a press conference on the high-quality development of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Health Industry, where the city’s progress in this sector was introduced. As one of the key industrial clusters in Lishui, with a market value exceeding 10 billion RMB, this industry has flourished in recent years, with frequent successes. Cutting-edge talent, research support, and incubation platforms have been steadily gathering, while leading enterprises are “accelerating ahead” and emerging companies are “blooming in competition” making it a strong driving force for regional development.
Lishui attaches great importance to the development of the TCM and big health industry. In recent years, it has fully implemented the “Lishui City TCM and Big Health Industry Development Three-Year Action Plan (2023-2025)”, striving to create a “new highland of modern TCM and big health industry in Zhejiang”, a “Yangtze River Delta TCM health care and rehabilitation destination”, and a “national plant extraction science and innovation highland”.
Under high-level promotion, the Lishui Municipal Party Committee and the municipal government have identified the TCM and big health industry chain as a cross-county municipal industrial chain. They focus on six major fields: characteristic medicinal material cultivation, plant extraction products, health food, Chinese medicine preparations, beauty products, and TCM health tourism. They mainly focus on attracting investment, strengthening element protection, providing precise services to enterprises, and deepening industrial exchanges. Since 2023, a total of 47 key projects in the TCM and big health category have been attracted, with a fixed asset investment of 18.262 billion yuan.
At the same time, Lishui is leveraging its high-quality ecological foundation and rich medicinal herb resources to accelerate the growth of the TCM manufacturing sector, thus promoting the development of primary and tertiary industries. This has begun to form a coordinated development pattern for the primary, secondary, and tertiary industries. In the primary sector, efforts have been made to select authentic medicinal herb varieties and promote the ecological cultivation of “Li Jiu Wei” (Lishui’s Nine Signature Medicinal Herbs), establishing a number of demonstration bases for herb cultivation, standardized planting, and seed breeding, and incorporating Ganoderma into the food and drug substance directory. Currently, the total area for medicinal herb cultivation in the city has reached 329,700 acres, covering 154 townships across the city. In the secondary sector, a characteristic cluster of TCM processing industries has initially taken shape, focusing on Chinese medicinal herb slices, Chinese medicine formulations, plant extracts, health products, and more. In the first three quarters of 2024, industrial enterprises in the sector achieved a year-on-year revenue growth of 8.1%. In the tertiary sector, the integration of business types and cross-industry collaborations has enriched the industrial system. TCM is being paired with culinary arts, resulting in the development of 81 medicinal food recipes, with health food incorporated into the provincial “Hundred Counties, Thousand Bowls” culinary initiative. Activities like the “TCM Cultural Night Market” have attracted younger generations, and more than 20 wellness tourism routes have been developed.
Additionally, Lishui City adheres to service industry development as the core, optimizing and improving the innovative ecological chain of “industry-guided science and technology, science and technology-indexing talent, talent-reliant education, and education-empowered industry”. It highlights the “key variable” of talent and science and technology, activates the “greatest increment” for leapfrog development, and promotes the continuous breakthrough to high-end and innovative advancement of the TCM and big health industry. The construction of innovative platforms has been highly effective, with the establishment of the Zhejiang University-Lishui Joint Innovation Center for Life Sciences and Health, and the Lishui International Science and Technology Innovation Center being awarded “The Most Investment-Worthy Biopharmaceutical Full-Chain Industrial Park”. Enterprises are supported to continuously innovate and tackle challenges, with Wecome Pharmaceutical Group Company Limited, Benefit Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Yizhun Medical AI Technology Co.,Ltd, and Fangge Pharmaceutical Industry Co Ltd achieving a series of new results. Industrial talents are accelerating their aggregation, gradually forming an integrated industrial chain collaborative innovation model led by science and technology, with enterprises at the forefront of tackling challenges, and talent cultivation.
At the press conference, officials from the Lishui Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology, the Lishui Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Lishui Municipal Health Commission, the Lishui Municipal Market Supervision Administration, and Lishui University answered questions from reporters. They discussed topics such as the innovative development of Lishui’s TCM health industry, the continued promotion of “Li Jiu Wei” medicinal herb cultivation, the research and development of TCM hospital formulations and their future prospects, the establishment of the province’s first Zhejiang Provincial Cosmetics Plant Raw Materials Research Center at the city level, and the role of Lishui University’s School of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Health Industries in supporting the high-quality development of the TCM health industry.
